The view from inside the industry.
Italy, China, America. And the work behind the things we carry.
I am Joe. I have spent more than fifteen years working on accessories, from choosing products for the Italian market to developing them with suppliers in China and building businesses across the United States, Italy and Asia. Form in Hand brings that experience back to an object I keep returning to: the iPhone case.
I started in Apple accessory distribution in Italy in 2008. At Attiva, and later FG Distribuzione, my work involved finding products, understanding what made them useful and getting them into the market. Buying gradually became something more hands-on: working on a product range, meeting suppliers and following what happened between an idea and a shipment.
From a drawing to a finished object.
China became part of my working life, first through sourcing trips and then through roles based there. At ID America, my work connected sourcing in China with operations at the US headquarters. At Aiino, I led production for a range of Apple accessories, working with suppliers, logistics and the team in China.
Through C-Next, I went on to develop projects for luxury fashion brands. That meant following the whole route: early design work and drawings, material sourcing, tooling, production and delivery. I have also co-founded an everyday-carry business, Atech. Those experiences taught me to look at how an object is put together, how a design becomes repeatable in production and which details deserve another sample before moving ahead.
A short detour through sound.
Music took the work into headphones, custom-fit products and the accessories around them. As a co-founder of ADVSOUND and SPEK Research, I worked on product development and crowdfunding across Italy, China and the US. I am named as a co-inventor on US patents for a headphone stand and an oto-block applicator used in making ear impressions. Different objects, with the same need to connect an idea to something a person can actually use.
Back to cases.
Today, based in Hong Kong, I work with Trovi Technologies and help build Materik, across brand development, product launches and the practical work of bringing products to market. That relationship is part of this journal and is disclosed in the relevant coverage.
Here, I want to give cases the attention their details deserve: the edge around a camera, the feel of a button, a material that changes with use, the choices behind a tool or a finish. I want to hear from other makers, follow original sources and put practical experience beside the product descriptions.
Cases are the starting point. Mounts, wallets, straps and other accessories belong in the story when they change how we carry and use a phone. Form in Hand is my personal editorial project, built one useful story at a time.
